Five Recognized Species of Genus Lycengraulis-Engraulidae Anchovies


Lycengraulis is a genus of bony fishes who belong to the family “Anchovies”. They are native to Central America and South America. Currently, five species have been recognized in this genus, known for their distinctive features, colors, and sizes. The name of the five species are- 


  • Lycengraulis Batesii

  • Lycengraulis figueiredoi

  • Lycengraulis grossidens

  • Lycengraulis limnichthys

  • Lycengraulis poeyi

Members of Genus Lycengraulis

The members of the “Lycengraulis” genus belong to the class- Actinopterygii, Order- Clupeiformes, Subfamily-Engraulidae. Most of them have largemouth, pig-like snout, extending upper jaw, sharp teeth with both jaws.


These reside in freshwater and brackish water throughout the world. They are mostly found in green color with blue reflection and silver stripes. These fishes mainly feed on plankton and fish larvae.

Lycengraulis Batesii is known for its large body, canine teeth, and enlarged gill raker denticles. This fish can reach up to 30 cm in length and prefer to live in low salinity estuaries and freshwater at the depth of 10 m. They native to the west of central and South Atlantic Ocean and are found in Manacacias River, Amazon River, Rivers of the Guianas, and the Orinoco River.

This fish is known for its distinctive features such as conical shaped head, short snout, short and thin upper maxilla, etc. They are pale to light yellow in color and have brownish to silver stripes all over their body. These fishes share many similarities with L.Batesiiin terms of body profiles, shapes, number of rays, etc.

3. Lycengraulis grossidens

Lycengraulis grossidens is a coastal fish found in estuaries along the Southwest Atlantic Coast. They are native to Belize and Argentina. These fishes have an elongated and compressed body, pointed snout, largemouth. Their maximum length is 300 mm. They mainly feed on zooplankton and invertebrates including mollusks, crustaceans, etc.

4. Lycengraulis limnichthys

This fish is relatively slender and known for its prominent snout, well-spaced teeth, and larger jaws. The coloration of the upper body is blue and the lower part is silvery-white, having several small black dots on the upper gill cover. They can reach up to 19 cm and are primarily found in the freshwater at the depth of 10m. 

5. Lycengraulis poeyi

Lycengraulis poeyi has an elongated and compressed body, pointed snout, short upper jaw, and large lower jaw. They live in muddy inshore areas but also inhabit brackish estuaries and river mouths. These fish can reach up to 23 cm and are found at the depth of 10 m. They are native to El Salvador to Northern Peru. This fish is similar to the color of L. limnichthys.
